I keep circling the same question these days: is AI a bridge or a wall? English first, then the honest bits. My short answer is that it is both, and which one you end up with depends on where you start. The gap between a small elite and everyone else, in both knowledge and money, has been widening rather than shrinking. And I do not think AI will close it on its own. There is a neat English way to put this: tools are amplifiers. When you are good, AI amplifies your good. When you are not, it amplifies your not.

The old story of the digital divide was simple: do you have a connection or not. We spent years wiring people up, and by early 2025 the world had roughly 5.5 billion internet users. So we sort of declared victory. But access turned out to be the easy part. Once everyone is online, a new question appears: what are you actually reading, and can you tell the good stuff from the junk. That is the new digital divide, the one nobody planned for.

A friend of the words told me something I cannot shake: AI does not level the playing field, it tilts the slope. The people who already know how to think get ten times stronger, and the people who never learned how get left further behind. There is even a name for the cheap, auto-generated mess that floods the free corners of the internet: the slop economy. Roughly forty percent of it is machine-made, designed to grab attention, not to inform. The rich buy their way past it with subscriptions and good sources. The rest of us wade through it.

So do I worry? Honestly, a little. Not because AI is evil. Because I finally see that the tool only hands back whatever you put in. That is the whole lesson, and it is the one I want to keep saying out loud until it sticks.

The pattern I most want to lock in today is the + comparative, the + comparative, the English way of saying the more..., the more.... It works in both speaking and writing.

• The wider the gap grows, the harder it is to bridge.(差距越大,越难弥合。)

• The more you feed it, the more you get back.(你喂进去越多,拿回来越多,回扣"放大器"。)

Two things to watch. First, the opening half is an adverbial clause and the closing half is the main clause; neither one inverts, you simply put the + comparative at the front of each. Second, do not confuse it with the short form the more... the better, which drops the subject; the full version keeps both halves complete.

Another high-frequency pair is widen and narrow. To say the gap is getting bigger, use widen the gap; to say it is shrinking, use narrow the gap. Both are transitive and take the object directly, which sounds far more natural than make the gap bigger or smaller.

• ❌ The gap is very big between rich and poor. → ✅ There is a huge gap between the rich and the poor.(定冠词 the + 形容词 = 一类人,the rich / the poor 比 poor people 更书面、更地道。)

• ❌ AI makes the rich more rich and the poor more poor. → ✅ AI makes the rich richer and the poor poorer.(形容词比较级,不是 more + 原级。)

• ❌ The internet let everyone get information same. → ✅ The internet gives everyone the same access to information, but not the same quality of it.("同样"是 the same,不是单独一个 same。)

• ❌ I very agree this opinion. → ✅ I strongly agree with this view.(agree 是动词,用 strongly 修饰;同意某观点是 agree with a view。)

• gap(最通用)→ the wealth gap / the cognitive gap

• divide(鸿沟,偏结构性)→ the digital divide / a growing divide

• chasm(深谷,语气最重)→ a chasm opened up between them

• gulf(海湾)→ a widening gulf

• widen / narrow → widen the gap / narrow the divide

• deepen → the divide deepens year by year

• bridge(动词化)→ to bridge the gap between the two groups

• close → we are still a long way from closing it

• amplify → AI amplifies what you already have

• magnify → technology magnifies existing advantages

• widen the spread → it widens the spread between top and bottom

The digital divide is now a quality divide. 词根 dividere(分开,拉丁),同族 division、individual(不可再分)。

• amplify ˈæmplɪfaɪ — 放大。Tools amplify what you already are. 词根 amplus(大的、宽广的,拉丁),同族 ample、amplifier。

A chasm opened up between the digital haves and have-nots. 源自希腊语 khasma(张开的深渊)。

The free web is drowning in slop.

The rich pay a premium for quality information.

Algorithms have become the new gatekeepers.

We are far from parity in AI access. 词根 par(相等)。

AI uptake is fast, but real mastery is rare.

• The question is not whether AI brings inequality, but who gets amplified and who gets left behind.(问题不是 AI 会不会带来不平等,而是谁被放大、谁被落下。)

• Access to the internet is no longer the whole story; the quality of what you reach matters more.(接入不再是全部,你能触达的内容质量更要紧。)

• Technology is never neutral; it runs on somebody's choices.(技术从不中立,它靠某些人的选择运转。)

⭐ ⭐ 今日表达 TOP3(地道向)

AI does not level the playing field; it tilts the slope. 比 make it unfair 有画面。

The people without skills get left behind.

The rest of us wade through the junk.

From access to quality: how the digital divide keeps changing shape.

The first version of the digital divide was about access. Either you had a computer and a connection, or you did not. Governments and companies spent years pushing hardware and cables into every corner, and by early 2025 the world counted about 5.5 billion people online, with nearly ninety percent of people over six expected to be connected by 2030. On paper, the access gap was closing.

It turns out access was the easy part. Scholars have since mapped the divide in layers, and each layer is harder to fix than the last. The first layer is the access divide, whether you can get online at all. The second is the usage divide, whether you use the connection to study and build, or only to scroll and shop. The third is the outcome divide, whether you turn the same online resources into real skills, better jobs, or just wasted hours. Now there is a fourth, the AI divide: who designs the models, who can wield them well, and who can even audit them. The deeper the layer, the more it depends on education, income, and existing networks, which is why the whole thing behaves like the Matthew effect. The more you already have, the more you gain.

There is also a newer cut of the problem. Some researchers now talk about a new digital divide that has moved from whether you are online to the quality of what you reach. On one side sit the digital elite, who can afford subscriptions, reliable news, and ad-free reading. On the other side sit billions of digital plebs trapped in what is called the slop economy, a secondary internet of AI content farms and algorithmic junk, where roughly forty percent of what floats past is machine-generated, attention-grabbing, and low in real facts. You can be online all day and still be information-poor.

That is where the amplifier idea lands hardest. AI does not level the field, it tilts the slope. The evidence keeps pointing the same way. Stanford's AI Index counted the top AI models of 2023 and found the United States produced 61, the European Union 21, and China 15, a striking concentration of design power in a few hands. Meanwhile a whole vocabulary of new work has sprung up around the "superindividual", the person who uses AI to do the work of a small team. The catch is that AI tends to reward the underlying abilities a person already has: logic, fast learning, the knack for breaking a problem apart. Those who have them get amplified. Those who do not get left further behind. One observer put it bluntly: AI replaces the reason you were hired, so what you must sell now is not what you know, but what you can judge.

So which abilities actually get amplified, and which get left behind? The pattern is coming into focus. Asking good questions now beats answering them, because AI already answers everything. The courage to be wrong beats the need to be right, because AI never stumbles into a lucky accident the way a careless scientist once did. Judgment beats the mastery of any single skill, because skills are being automated faster than they can be learned. The ability to move across fields beats digging one hole for ten years, because the interesting discoveries happen in the gaps between domains. And empathy, the one thing machines can only imitate, turns out to be the scarcest of all. These five are not what AI takes away from us; they are what AI makes more valuable.

• Q: Does AI make people more equal?

A: Not on its own. It amplifies what you already have, so the gap can actually widen.

• Q: Is the digital divide solved now that most people are online?

A: Hardly. We solved access, but the new divide is about information quality.

• Q: Who benefits most from AI?

A: People with strong underlying skills, the ones who already know how to think and break problems apart.

• digital divide → ˈdɪdʒɪtəl dɪˈvaɪd. The two d sounds touch end to end, so run them together without a pause.

• the slop economy → weaken "the" to ðə before the consonant, and keep the o in slop short and rounded ɒ. Do not stretch it into three syllables.

• amplifier → the stress sits on the first syllable, ˈæmplɪfaɪər, and the ending -fier is faɪər, not fɪr.

Tools only amplify what you already are.

The chart below shows the number of notable artificial intelligence models produced in 2023 by selected countries and regions. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant. Write at least 150 words in about 20 minutes.

• The United States dominated, producing 61 notable models, far more than any other region.

• The EU and China trailed well behind, with 21 and 15 models respectively.

• At 61, the United States accounted for more than the other two regions combined.

• China's total was roughly a quarter of that of the United States.

2. Key features:

Standing on 凉州莲花山(姑臧紫山)and looking east, the whole argument about the digital divide lands in one glance. 古凉州,今天叫武威,was never just a city of walls. It was a crossroads on the Silk Road, a place where camel caravans carried not only goods but news, where a trader's value lay as much in what he knew as in what he carried. Back then the divide was physical: whoever sat on the road held the information, and whoever was cut off from it fell behind.

Today the road has moved online, but the lesson has not changed. Connectivity still decides whether a place is at the centre or on the edge. The old city of 姑臧 ran seven li north to south and three east to west, a road net measured by feet and cart wheels; today a city's fate is measured by bandwidth and by the quality of what its people can reach. The new digital divide is quietly repeating the old Silk Road story in a new language: the ones who can get reliable information become the centres, and the ones stuck in the slop economy become the edges.

So when I read the chart of who builds the world's AI models, I think of Liangzhou again. The design power of this new road is concentrated in a few hands, just as the control of the old road once was. The question for a place like 古凉州 is the same one it always faced: not whether to connect, but how to make sure its people get the good of the connection, not just the noise. That, I think, is the deepest lesson I want to carry away today: the road was never the point, the person walking it always was.
