Cage
G9 Tony Zhu
Amidst the bustling metropolis of Beijing, lives a whole community of workers with relatively limited economic means. Their lives, however, are filled with challenges. In this image, a worker sits, gazing out from a construction vehicle. The fence behind him resembles a cage, suggesting tight confinement. Who is he? Is he someone's child? Is he someone's father? As he sits in the dilapidated vehicle looking out at the bustling world, we see that the pressures of life have worn down his edges. In moments of reverie, does he ever catch a glimpse of the confused yet ambitious youth he once was?
wind
G9 Tony Zhu
This photo was taken in the Hunshandake Desert of Inner Mongolia—a truly desolate area. The weather and climate here are harsh; the winds here are particularly strong. When sand is scooped up with a shovel and tossed into the wind, unique shapes are formed instantly – a giant dragon dancing in the breeze. In the past, few people paid attention to the impacts of climate change. The symptoms do not appear right away, and they usually do not disrupt urban environments. The emergence of desertification serves as a constant reminder of the importance of focusing on climate action.
Ship, water, iceberg, stone, penguin, snow
G10 Belle Deng
This photo was taken in Antarctica. While taking this photo, I witnessed the dramatic scene of ice calving into the water—something I had only seen previously in videos. Due to global warming, glaciers around the world are melting at an alarming rate. This will lead to rising sea levels, ultimately submerging cities. However, long before cities are flooded, many animals living in these cold regions will lose their homes. Therefore, it is crucial to take action to stop global warming and reduce carbon emissions. We must not let such beautiful landscapes exist only in old photographs.
The Hercules of Plants
G6 Peter Jiang
This is a photo of a royal water lily I took this summer in the tropical rainforest of the Botanical Garden of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Xishuangbanna, Yunnan Province. In recent years, the climate around us has become increasingly unpredictable, and this summer was particularly unusual. A crucial part of climate action is to emphasize the protection of tropical rainforests. Unfortunately, due to human activities and climate change, 1.2% of the world's tropical rainforests disappear each year. Protecting rainforests is now our top priority.
Black Carbon Dioxide
G9 Maimai Li
When visiting Europe in the summer, I came across two tall chimneys releasing carbon dioxide into the air. In this image, the gas going into the air is almost merging with the clouds. Through this photograph, I would like to express how municipal fossil fuel burning is all around us. By converting the color image to be black and white, I also want to highlight how our future will be bleak and dark if we don’t start taking action.
Grassland Scenery
G8 JJ Dong
This photo, taken in Xinjiang on July 6, 2024, shows six riders crossing a vast green grassland on three horses. The serene backdrop of rolling hills and distant mountains creates a peaceful atmosphere. It highlights the harmony between humans and nature, where horseback riding offers both relaxation and a sense of well-being, reducing stress and enhancing overall happiness.
Shadows That Can Only Be Seen During A Power Outage
G10 Belle Deng
When I took this photo, my family and I were staying in a villa by the sea in the United States. That evening, due to a storm and a minor tsunami, the entire area lost power. Besides being unable to turn on the lights and stove, we also couldn't use basic modern amenities like the internet or flushing toilets. We couldn’t go outside, and even playing card games was impossible. We had to use our phone flashlights and mirrors to illuminate our meals. We soon discovered that most of the food in the fridge had spoiled. For us, this experience was incredibly difficult; but for many people living in slums, this is just daily life, one which often can even be much worse. Addressing poverty as the first United Nations Sustainable Development Goal is crucial. I hope no one has to live like this. Yet some people, living in wealth, remain completely unaware of these realities. It's like the shadows on the wall—only revealed in the absence of light.
Weight of Education
G11 Mori Li
This photo was taken in my former school when I went back there to do volunteer work. On the left side is one of the school’s teachers, showing the new students how to make their beds. I think providing education means to teach people how to do better not only academically, but also in all aspects of life and in society.
Running
G6 William Liu
Without peace and stability, safety and health, how can we truly enjoy running joyfully on the beach?
Wishing Health and Safety for You All
G10 Terry Chen
The men and women of the Maasai tribe in Kenya appear so full of vitality, but in reality, they have little access to quality healthcare when they fall ill. I hope the local government can enhance healthcare benefits for the community.
Photovoltaic Rooftop
G5 Vivian Fan, Sanlitun Campus
The Songzan Basong TsorinkaHotel in the Nyingchi region of Tibet left a deep impression on me. There is a total of 14 buildings and 122 rooms, each featuring a photovoltaic panel rooftop, covering an area of 4,622 square meters and providing over 50% of the hotel's electricity. To capture the solar power generation equipment, my dad taught me how to operate a drone. Through the drone's lens, I was able to closely observe the photovoltaic panels on the hotel’s roof. These dark gray panels look as if they are ordinary rooftops, blending harmoniously with the traditional Tibetan architecture. Harnessing the intense sunlight at high altitude for clean energy significantly reduces the hotel's reliance on petroleum, which has a very positive impact on the environment and climate.
Cattle on the Mountain
G6 Sam Hou
A few cows are playing together on the lush grass; it’s as if the sky reflects their mood—brilliant blue and filled with sunshine.
A carefree family of wild ducks in Shichahai
G3 Brayden Liu, Sanlitun Campus
My family and I went boating in Shichahai. We were pleasantly surprised to find that, as one of Beijing's ancient water bodies with a rich history, Shichahai has benefited from efforts by relevant authorities to improve water quality and restore the aquatic environment. The water is now clear, and the ecosystem for plants and animals is thriving. We even encountered a family of little wild ducks, resting freely in this peaceful and healthy water area. May everyone who loves this waterway take action to preserve its quality, ecology, and beauty.
A Person Who Endures Hardships
G10 Joel Zhang
With the development of urbanization, more people have found jobs and stable living environments. However, in economically advanced areas like Central Hong Kong, there are still individuals whose work involves collecting garbage. In contrast to the fast-paced backdrop of workers commuting on buses, the elderly woman pushing a garbage cart through the bustling streets at night appears somewhat out of place. For her, high living costs and low income make life a constant struggle. A sense of helplessness may just be a part of her daily reality. Despite this, she tirelessly navigates the thriving streets – day and night.
