Covid-19 would still be of natural origin even if a lab worker had become infected with a virus in the field and brought the disease back to Wuhan, Anthony Fauci has claimed.
Dr Fauci, who led the US response to the pandemic as director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) and Chief Medical Advisor, has been accused of funding risky research in China.
The US was supporting scientists at the Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV) who were collecting and manipulating bat viruses to discover how they could evolve to infect humans.Wuhan virologists have been accused of operating under lax biosecurity conditions which could have allowed rare viruses from remote caves to leak out into a highly populated area.
But speaking to The New York Times, Dr Fauci said that would not constitute a lab leak.
“All the intelligence groups agree that this was not an engineered virus,” he said. “And if it’s not an engineered virus, what actually leaked from the lab?
“If it wasn’t an engineered virus, somebody went out into the field, got infected, came back to the lab and then spread it out to other people. That’ ain’t a lab leak, strictly speaking. That’s a natural occurrence.”
In a wide-ranging interview, Dr Fauci said that the viruses being studied by scientists in Wuhan could not have been engineered into Covid-19.
“Those viruses could not possibly ever turn into SARS-CoV-2, even if they tried to turn them into SARS-CoV-2 because they were evolutionary so far.
“Anybody who knows anything about virology would say there’s nothing you could do to those viruses that would turn them into SARS-CoV-2,” he added 。
“Yet what gets conflated is that the National Institutes of Health (NIH) funded them, therefore you are liable for the lab leak,if it’s a lab leak. It had nothing to do with what we did. I sleep fine.”
Last week a US Senate committee released a300 page reportwhich concluded that the pandemic most likely came from a lab leak which was the result of a ‘research-related’ incident in Wuhan.
The report said that the theory that Covid-19 jumped from animals to humans in a market ‘no longer deserves the benefit of the doubt, or the presumption of accuracy.’
Grant proposals show that in 2010, the Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV) embarked on “gain of function experiments” to increase the infectiousness of Sars coronavirus in humans. By 2015, Wuhan scientists had created a highly infectious chimeric virus that targeted the human upper respiratory tract.
In 2018 and 2019, grants from the NIAID in the US showed that Dr Shi Zhengli at WIV had applied to work on “virus infection experiments in humanised mice” using Sars coronaviruses - to find out what changes could lead to a spillover event into humans.
Wuhan scientists had collected more than 220 SARS-related coronaviruses, from hundreds of miles away, at least 100 of which were never made public. Members of staff were also photographed wearing inadequate levels of personal protective equipment while handling bats.
Dr Fauci told the New York Times that he still did not know the origin of Covid but said more needed to be done to make labs more secure, and prevent animal diseases from jumping into humans.
“I feel that until you have definitive proof of one or the other, it is essential to have an open mind,” he added.
“If it’s a natural occurrence, for goodness’ sake, natural occurrences happen all the time. We should have been doing something about that.”
“If it's a lab leak then we really should have been much much more attentive to protocols and training and restrictions.”
