在去年6月的一场TED演讲上 ，中国留美学生Tianxiang Tan向美国观众做了一场名为《西方话语体系下的中国模式》（The China Model behind Western Mainstream Narratives）的演讲。
在演讲中，他讲起自己19岁第一次来到美国读书时，曾认为批评中国很酷，周围的美国人也会对此大为赞赏。但后来他却发觉，事情不对劲……
在演讲中，他从自身经历出发，阐释了在国外的话语体系中，为何中国会被误解，也介绍了让国外听众耳目一新的中国模式的关键特性（unheard key features that make the Chinese society model unique）。
At a larger context I start to realize that in this society or in the Western society in general has a tendency to demonize China, saying that China is not a democratic country and the things that they do is evil. 后来我意识到，在美国或者说在西方，人们都很容易妖魔化中国。他们说中国不民主，所以总做坏事。

随着这些妖魔化滤镜而来的，就是一些唱衰中国的言论。有人甚至专门写了本书，叫《中国即将崩溃》（The Coming Collapse of China）。然而，这预测似乎并不那么准：
He wrote the book called The Coming Collapse of China, predicted that China will collapse in a few years. He made that prediction in 2002, 2005, 2011, 2012 and 2016, each time with a different timeline proposed, because the previous timeline has already expired. 他写了本书叫《中国即将崩溃》，预言中国将在几年内崩溃。他分别在2002、2005、2011、2012 和2016年预测过，每次的时间表都不一样，因为每次的时间表都过期了。
演讲中，这位留学生还举了个例子，他说，中国每年1.2亿人次出境，到世界各地旅游，如果中国真如西方话语中的“黑暗、邪恶和腐败”，那他们会不会更愿意留在当地从此不再回国呢？
而实际上，他们都回来了。
与之形成鲜明对比的是，在西方的“帮助”下，本应实现“民主化”的一些中东国家，难民却源源不断地涌入他们的欧洲邻国。
在与世界的接触中，这位留学生思考的视角有了新的转变，也站在旁观者的视角，对世界和自己的祖国有了新的思考。这或许印证了网上流行的那句“出国，是最好的爱国教育。”
