The xun dates back to the Stone Age and is mentioned in the Book of Songs for its simple and rich tone. In history, when Xiang Yu was besieged at Gaixia, Liu Bang ordered his soldiers to sing Chu songs, which stirred feelings of homesickness in the enemy soldiers. This was accompanied by the sound of the xun.

The xun was also a part of the elegant music played in royal courts over the generations and was beloved by the public. Its sound, like its history, is ancient, mysterious, and mournful, making it suitable for solemn and timeless music.
