In many countries, a small number of people earn extremely high salaries. Some people believe that this is good for the country, but others think that governments should not allow salaries above a certain level. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Introduction
In many societies, a small minority earn a staggering income that far outstrips what the average person can make. While supporters claim that such high earnings benefit a country in many ways, I would argue that it is the government's duty to rein them in.
❖ staggering adj.
❖ far outstrip v.
❖ rein in v.
Body paragraph 1
The mismatch between outsized pay and social contribution is a growing source of public concern. In most societies, rewards are expected to reflect the value of one's work. When influencers who are highly marketable earn astronomical sums while essential workers such as teachers, nurses and researchers struggle on modest incomes, public faith in the fairness of the system begins to erode. This erosion is vividly illustrated by the recent strikes staged by French teachers, who took industrial action to demand fair pay. Another underestimated risk is that, if unchecked, this high pay may become disconnected from performance, as evidenced by executives continuing to receive large bonuses despite corporate failure.
❖ mismatch n.
❖ outsized adj.
❖ astronomical adj.
❖ erode v.
❖ vividly adv.
❖ industrial action n.
❖ unchecked adj.
❖ disconnected adj.
❖ corporate failure n.
Body paragraph 2
Nevertheless, rewarding high achievers is not without merit. Admittedly, the rarity of certain talents, combined with the demands of their roles, can justify exceedingly high pay for top athletes, scientists and investment bankers, whose contributions benefit society as a whole. It is equally true that such financial rewards motivate young people to pursue these key professions. However, closer scrutiny reveals that if no strings were attached, unchecked personal pursuit of wealth would lead to ethically questionable endeavors that override integrity, sacrificing public good. In scientific research, for instance, lucrative industry sponsorships can tempt researchers to produce findings that favour their paymasters rather than serve the public interest. A similar scenario is also valid for financial sector, where reckless risk-taking is fueled by enormous bonuses.
❖ high achievers n.
❖ rarity n.
❖ exceedingly adv.
❖ scrutiny n.
❖ ethically questionable adj.
❖ endeavors n.
❖ override v.
❖ lucrative adj.
❖ sponsorships n.
❖ paymasters n.
❖ reckless adj.
❖ risk-taking n.
❖ fueled v.
Conclusion
Ultimately, the question is not whether high pay can be justified, but whether it should be left unchecked. Without government intervention, the gap between reward and contribution will continue to widen—at the expense of social trust and the public good.
❖ ultimately adv.
❖ justified adj.
❖ unchecked adj.
❖ intervention n.
❖ widen v.
❖ at the expense of 以……为代价
❖ public good n.
