Six thirty. I was standing in front of my own bookshelf, which is basically my private museum, and I caught myself doing something stupid. I always reach for the same three books on the top shelf and never touch the bottom ones. That little habit told me everything: even in my own room, someone, years ago, decided the path I walk. So today's piece, the one about how museums and exhibition halls are arranged, isn't some faraway theory. It's about the path I walk through my own stuff.
Let me just talk it out. People use the word museum for everything. But the piece makes a clean cut: a museum keeps things, for good. An exhibition hall shows things, and tears them down next week. I used to think they were the same. They're not. The Louvre keeps. A trade fair shows and leaves. Simple.
And the three questions. What do you show. In what order. How do you make people remember. I kept repeating these on the way to buy soy milk this morning, like a stupid little mantra. What, then order, then memory. That's the skeleton of every exhibition anywhere. I don't know why that felt like a small win, but it did.
• a collection of + 复数名词(a collection of relics),collection 作「藏品总称」时通常可数、常用单数形式表整体。
• exhibit(展品,可数)↔ exhibition(展览,活动/展陈),两者不同:exhibit 是一件东西,exhibition 是一场展。
• 定语从句里 which / that 指物:a museum which keeps its collections;口语里 which 常可省,但写作保留更稳。
What you show decides what people remember.(展什么,决定别人记住什么。)
• by the time / over time 表时间推移:Over time, the layout itself teaches you.
• 博物馆很大 |✘ a very big museum → ✔ a large museum / a major museum(very big 太口语、不地道,形容场馆用 large / major)
• 摆放展品 |✘ put the exhibits → ✔ display / arrange / lay out the exhibits(put 太泛,展陈用 display / arrange / lay out)
• 让人记住 |✘ let people remember → ✔ help people remember / make it memorable(let people remember 生硬,用 make it memorable 更自然)
• 路线 |✘ the road of visiting → ✔ the circulation route / the visitor flow(参观路线叫 circulation route,不叫 road)
• museum → collection-based institution / a place that keeps its heritage
• arrange → display / lay out / curate / stage
• path → circulation route / visitor flow / trajectory
• remember → retain / recall / stay with you
• order → sequence / the logic of arrangement

新学①:A is built around X, while B is built around Y.(对比两件事物的根本,适合 Part 3)
• A museum is built around its collections, while an exhibition hall is built around the show.
新学②:What strikes me is that ...(突出最打动的一点,口语写作通用,回扣 09-16 文化)
• What strikes me is how the same idea, layout, shows up in a building and in a museum case.
旧句回扣:rub off on(回扣 09-16 文化)——The way a museum arranges things rubs off on how I arrange my own desk.
今日表达 TOP3(地道优先,今日主攻维)
2. lay out | 摆、排布(lay out the exhibits,比 put 地道太多)
3. make it memorable | 让人记住(替换 let people remember,写作口语都好用)
The bar chart compares how many people visited seven leading museums in different cities around the world in 2019. Overall, the Louvre in Paris led by a wide margin, while Tokyo National Museum sat far behind the rest.
The Louvre attracted about 9.6 million visitors, the highest of the seven. The National Museum of China in Beijing came second at 7.4 million, followed by the Vatican Museums at 6.9 million. The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the British Museum in London recorded 6.5 and 5.9 million respectively, with Tate Modern just behind at 5.8 million. Tokyo National Museum, at 3.3 million, drew roughly one third of the Louvre's total.
In short, the European flagships crowded the middle of the list, but the Beijing figure shows that the habit of keeping is truly worldwide, not a Western monopoly. That connects straight back to the three questions: what a city chooses to keep decides how many people come to see it.
The word museum reaches back to the Greek Muse, the goddess of memory and the arts. A museum, at root, is a place that holds. An exhibition hall, by contrast, comes from ex- (out) and habere (to hold): it takes things out to show them, then puts them away. One keeps, one shows. That single cut explains why the Louvre is a museum and a trade fair is not.
Now the three questions. What do you show decides the story. In what order you show it decides the pace, the walk, the breath. How you make people remember decides whether they leave with anything at all. The piece calls these the skeleton of every exhibition, anywhere, from a village shrine to the British Museum.
And then the six paradigms: by time, by theme, by civilisation, free-form, by story, by contrast. Too many names at first. But I realised I already live inside them. The Wuwei Confucian Temple I pass is by time plus a central axis. Putting relics at the foot of Liangzhou Lotus Mountain (凉州莲花山 / 姑臧紫山) is civilisation-by-region. I wasn't learning new words. I was naming paths I already walk.
Why this sits in general knowledge and not a proper discipline finally made sense: any field's syllabus goes stale. Treat layout as the ability to organise information, direct attention, control pace, and it becomes portable. That is why it lives in the meta-capability library, not the museology department.
A museum, at its root, is a place that holds, and Liangzhou learned this long before the word was written down. 凉州莲花山(姑臧紫山)stands a short way southwest of the city, quiet for two thousand years; it is the mountain the locals still live under, and the place where, century after century, people hike and gather, carrying their own small collections of stories.
And the people of Liangzhou have always been keepers. The Former Liang Zhang Gui bronze galloping horse (前凉张轨铜奔马(马踏飞燕)) was unearthed from the Former Liang tomb at Leitai (雷台墓(前凉)), a treasure the Zhang family kept and the city still keeps. The Wuwei Confucian Temple (武威文庙), honoured as the foremost academy of the northwest (西北学宫之冠), is itself a layout that answers the three questions: what (the sage's legacy), in what order (the central axis, the bridge over the pond), how to remember (generation after generation of students).
Behind all this stands Liangzhou studies (凉州学), the scholarly system Wuwei people are building to study their own hometown, turning local memory into a discipline. When I say museum in English, I am not naming a foreign building. I am naming the Liangzhou habit of keeping, arranging and passing things down, only now in a tool more people can hear. There is Liangzhou beyond Liangzhou; wherever a Liangzhou person goes, that habit of keeping travels with them.
Let's read that in English, because this is exactly the kind of real material the speaking test rewards. What makes a good local museum, then? It is one built around its collections, meeting the demand to know one's own past, driven by careful curation, and rich in local meaning and a deep sense of place. Wuwei is that definition made flesh.
Look at its actual assets. Wuwei is a Silk Road pivot and a National Historical and Cultural City, and it is where China's tourism emblem, the Former Liang Zhang Gui bronze galloping horse (前凉张轨铜奔马(马踏飞燕)), was unearthed, that treasure coming from the Former Liang tomb at Leitai (雷台墓(前凉)). The Tiantishan Grottoes are called the cradle of Chinese cave temples; the Wuwei Confucian Temple (武威文庙) is honoured as the foremost academy of the northwest (西北学宫之冠). Add Liangzhou Lotus Mountain (凉州莲花山 / 姑臧紫山), where relics and local life meet, and you get both history and a living town in one place.
And here is the IELTS hook. Task 2 could easily ask: should a museum keep things, or should it stage shows? Wuwei's answer is the keep-and-arrange path: it turns relics, local craft and memory into something you can actually stand before, without the high-consumption model. Handy words for the test:
• collection-based institution
• careful curation
• a deep sense of place
• the circulation route
• make it memorable
• a golden cultural destination along the Silk Road
• Muse / memory(记忆):museum(缪斯之馆)→ memoir(回忆录)→ commemorate(纪念)。串联:A museum is where a city keeps its memory, as a memoir keeps a life's.
• ex- / habere(拿出·持):exhibit(展出)→ exhibition(展览)→ prohibit(禁,原挡住拿出)。串联:Exhibit takes out to show, prohibit holds it back.
• cura(照料):curate(策展)→ cure(治愈)→ accurate(精准,原细心做对)。串联:To curate is to care for a show, as to cure is to care for a body.
• circus / ring(环):circulation(动线)→ circle(圈)→ circus(马戏,原绕圈场)。串联:The circulation route is the circle a visitor walks.
• colligere(聚):collection(藏品)→ college(学院,原聚学之所)→ colleague(同僚)。串联:A collection gathers things, as a college gathers learners.
• gnarus(知):narrative(叙事)→ know(知)→ notes(笔记)。串联:A narrative is the line that lets you know the show.

Okay, so the bar chart I just looked at, it compares annual visitor numbers at seven major museums around the world in 2019. Right, the Louvre in Paris tops the list at about nine point six million, and Tokyo National Museum sits at the bottom with three point three. So the gap is huge, roughly three times.
What jumps out is how tightly packed the middle is. New York, London twice, Vatican, all between five point eight and six point nine. If I were doing this in the speaking test, I'd say "the Louvre led by a wide margin, while the London museums clustered in the middle". That word "clustered" is handy, very native, and it beats listing every number one by one.
