In the traditional Chinese solar calendar, the "Start of Spring" (
lichun) has always been highly valued as the first term of the 24 solar terms, embodying the saying, "The whole year's work depends on a good start in spring".
However, as the Year of the Horse approaches, various superstitious claims have been spreading rapidly across social media platforms. Assertions that the upcoming 2026 Year of the Horse is a "Springless Year" — making it inauspicious for weddings — have gone viral, with some even dubbing it a "Widow's Year".
inauspicious /ˌɪnɔːˈspɪʃəs/ adj.
The term "Springless Year" refers to a lunar year that contains no "Start of Spring" day. According to reports, the upcoming 2026 Year of the Horse will experience this phenomenon — no spring day falls within the entire lunar year.
In Chinese folk tradition, such years are variously called "bare years", "mute years", or "black years". Consequently, rumors have emerged online claiming that "a horse year without spring is unsuitable for marriage" or that "a bare year without spring is inauspicious for weddings".
Lin Yuan, a member of the Chinese Astronomical Society and a Tianjin-based astronomical science communicator, explained that this occurs because the lunar year is shorter than the tropical year. He emphasized that "no spring" simply means there is no
lichunday within that particular lunar year — it does not mean the solar term itself is absent.

The 2026 Year of the Horse lacks a
lichunday because the preceding Year of the Snake (2025) contains a leap sixth month, making it a 13-month lunar year that encompasses two
lichundays, thereby leaving the following lunar year without one.
