The Aoshan Mountain region, part of a nature reserve, features rugged terrain and sudden weather shifts. Authorities reaffirmed that unauthorized hikes are extremely dangerous and urged the public to respect regulations and cherish lives.

Despite longstanding bans, some hikers still attempt the risky Ao-Tai route, stretching from Aoshan Mountain to Taibai Mountain — a ridge trail known as one of China’s deadliest. Official reports recorded at least 46 fatalities or disappearances there between 2012 and 2017, and about 11 casualty accidents from 2021 to 2025.
