This week, Tokyo's Ueno Zoo has been gripped by a sense of warmth and reluctance.
Xiao Xiao and Lei Lei, the last two giant pandas on loan to Japan, will return to China in early 2026 as the China–Japan panda loan agreement nears its expiration.
The final public viewing period will run from Dec 23 to Jan 25 next year, with advance online reservations required. Visits will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis until Jan 12, after which a lottery system will be introduced from Jan 14.
Zoo officials estimate that about 178,000 visitors will come between Dec 16 and the final viewing day on Jan 25.
"The birth of these twins brought us an invaluable experience and moments that were deeply emotional," said Hitoshi Suzuki, chief of animal care and exhibition at Ueno Zoo. "For that, I am deeply grateful."
As the twins prepare to return to China, many in Japan have expressed sadness and reluctance. Some said they wished the pandas could stay, but acknowledged that China is their home and offered their blessings. One visitor said, "I will go to China to see you."
A visitor from Yamanashi prefecture said she took an early-morning limited express train to Tokyo to see the twins, adding that, while she felt sad about their departure, she was glad to see them one last time and hoped giant pandas would return to Japan in the future.
A long-time panda fan recalled loving Kang Kang and Lan Lan, the first giant pandas to arrive in Japan, and said she felt "very sad" as Xiao Xiao and Lei Lei prepare to return to China.
