Back at home, Sophie opened the letter from the tin box. The handwriting was different—more hurried, as if written in desperation:
“Margaret,

Thomas.”
Sophie felt a pang of sorrow. Thomas had waited for her grandmother, but why hadn’t Margaret gone to meet him?
She confronted her grandmother again, this time showing her the locket. Margaret stared at it for a long time before tears filled her eyes. “He gave this to me before he left for the war,” she whispered. “I loved him, but my father… he wouldn’t let me see him again. He burned his first letter. I never knew about this one.”
Sophie sat in stunned silence as Margaret recounted her story of a forbidden love torn apart by time and circumstance.
