好久没写这个专题了，今天我们来学习三组同义替换。我所挑出来的这些词汇不仅可以用在阅读、翻译、写作中，还会在听力中出现，大家要引起重视哦。
严格来说，它们应该是「同近义替换」。因为很少会有一个单词与另一个单词完全相同的情况。
01
entrench 加剧
entrench = accelerate
Optimists hope that online work can set Africa on the path of services-led growth trodden by countries such as India and the Philippines. Pessimists worry such work will entrench injustices.
译文：乐观主义者希望，在线工作可以让非洲走上印度和菲律宾等国走过的由服务业主导的增长道路。悲观主义者则担心这类工作会加剧不公。
entrench/ɪnˈtrentʃ/
entrench 最初来源于法语词汇 entrancher，意思为「挖壕沟」。挖掘战壕和其他防御工事目的是免受敌人攻击。于是它生出了一个比喻义：to establish sth very firmly so that it is very difficult to change「使根深蒂固，使处于牢固地位」，形容观念、习惯、权力或制度等因为太牢固而难以改变。
虽然挖战壕常给人积极的联想，但这个比喻义却常含贬义。网课「加剧」了教育的不平等，英文是 entrench educational inequality。对应的形容词 entrenched 就是「根深蒂固的」。属于外刊常用词，下面《经济学人》这句话就用到了它。
That idea has been forgotten. Land-use and occupational-licensing restrictions are still entrenched.
这个正确的观点已被遗忘。土地使用及职业许可方面的限制仍然根深蒂固。

gauge 衡量

More businesses may adopt a version of this model. The success of these strategies is hard to gauge.

这个单词容易读错，应该是 /ɡeɪdʒ/。gauge 原本是指测量用的「仪器，仪表」。比如汽车都有的 petrol gauge「油表」，还有 temperature gauge「温度计」。不过这种温度计常见于工业设备、汽车等，家用的温度计是 thermometer，既可以指体温计，也可以指户外温度计。
不管是油表还是温度计，都是为了测量数据而生。所以 gauge 作动词表示 to judge how people feel about something or what they are likely to do「判断，估计」别人的情感、态度或意图。比如 gauge her mood「揣摩她的心情」。类似 judge，make a judgement about 或 measure。
They interviewed employees to gauge their reaction to the changes.
他们与雇员面谈以判定他们的应变能力。
这个单词在外刊中经常碰到，不过只有六级在很久之间出过两次，考研英语尚未考过。好，我们来看《经济学人》的这个例句。
But borrowings are not included in official government budgets, making it hard to gauge risk.

ingenuity 创造性
ingenuity = creativity
Facing up to that threat will require a whole other level of ingenuity.

同源的形容词为 ingenious，常用来表示 very suitable for a particular purpose and resulting from clever new ideas，形容物体「精巧的」，或计划、思想等「新颖独特的；巧妙的」。来看 2020 年 12 月六级的阅读真题。
