《周处除三害》的电影名来自一个典故。《世说新语》记载，周处年少时凶暴强悍，被乡人认为是一大祸害，但却不自知。其余两个祸害是蛟龙和白虎。有人劝周处斩之而后快。大战三天三夜后，乡人以为祸害皆除，于是互相庆祝。周处回来后看到这番景象，悔悟之前行径恶劣，成为一名忠臣孝子。
但如果英文名直译为 Zhou Chu Eliminates the Three Evils，很多外国观众不懂。于是片方采用了归化的译法，省略人名，并且用佛教的观念将「三害」升华为「三毒」，英文为 three poisons 或「三不善根」 three unwholesome roots。分别对应 greed「贪」、hate「嗔」、delusion「痴」。
佛教用 pigeon「鸽子」、snake「蛇」和 pig「猪」具象化三毒，并且将其画在 Bhavacakra「有轮」或称「生命之轮」中。因此这部影片的英文名定为 The Pig, the Snake and the Pigeon。

提问：redemption 的动词是谁呢？是不是答成 redempt 啦？其实是 redeem。常用来表示「补救，补偿」，相当于 make up for，compensate for。这条释义脱胎自它的宗教义，即「救赎」，所以 self-redemption 是「自我救赎」。

authenticity

这个单词在《西部世界》中经常出现。narrative 来自拉丁语 narrativus，意思是 a description of events, especially in a novel「描述，叙述」，有时也会被译为「故事」。相当于 description，是一个可数名词。比如，a gripping narrative 是指「一段吸引人的叙述」。narrative 可以是虚构的，比如小说、电影中的故事；也可以是非虚构的，比如历史记录、新闻报道、个人经历的叙述等。
这个词还有其他释义，更为抽象和多变，其翻译问题曾困扰过我，所以印象更加深刻。另外，它也可以是 the act, process or skill of telling a story「叙事过程」或「叙事技巧」。所以文中 offer raw and authentic narratives 意思是「提供粗粝自然和真实叙事」。看上去简单，但很多时候我们无法直译，需要结合语境来理解。大家可以平时留意下。

兼有动词、名词两种词性，不管是哪种，都是非常正面的。作动词时，表示 to praise someone or something publicly「称赞，推崇」，相当于 speak highly of。比如 a highly acclaimed performance 意思是「备受赞誉的演出」。经常用于被动语态，构成 be acclaimed as「被誉为」。
作名词时，acclaim 是指「赞扬，高度评价」，可以替换 praise。下图《婚姻故事》用了名词 acclaim。

他被誉为英格兰现代最伟大的油画家。
critical
熟词生义 + 四级 +考研词汇
critical 在原文中不是「批判的」，也不是「关键的」，而是 using or involving careful judgment about the good and bad「评论性的，判断审慎的」。当它和 acclaim 搭配时，也就是原文中的 critical acclaim，意思就成了「高度评价」或译为「好评如潮」。
The book came out last year to great critical acclaim.
这本书去年出版，受到高度评价。
shy away from sth
熟词生义
此处的 shy 不是形容词「害羞的」，而是动词，构成了一个固定短语，表示 to avoid doing sth because you are nervous or frightened，通常是因为缺乏信息或者紧张所以「回避，畏惧」某事。比如，shy away from your responsibilities 是指「逃避责任」。2021 年英二考研翻译真题就用过这个短语。
The researchers also argued that when we shy away from casual interactions with strangers, it is often due to a misplaced anxiety that they might not want to talk to us.
