renowned
六级词汇
这个形容词派生自名词 renown，表示 fame and respect because of sth you have done that people admire「名誉，声望」。这个词也兼有动词词性，但极少使用。renowned 作为形容词，表示「著名的」，所以——我们能用它来替换 famous。之前给大家总结过，不晓得你有没有印象呢？

有哪些表示「大亨」的花样表达？
01 tycoon
长得像 typhoon「台风」但人家是 tycoon，指的是企业界的 a person who is successful in business or industry and has become rich and powerful 「巨头，大亨」。虽然不是四六级或考研词汇，但外刊很常用到。来看下面的《经济学人》例句。
Twenty-two of this group were controlled outright by corporations and tycoons, or had been until they were recently forced to restructure.
其中 22 家银行完全受控于企业和大亨，或者说，在近期被迫重组前一直如此。
02 mogul /ˈməʊɡəl/
长得有点像 Mongol「蒙古人」的 mogul 也是指「大亨」，「传媒业大亨」就是 media mogul。
03 baron
今天怎么有这么多长得相像的单词。有些同学是不是听说过 Barron’s 这家外媒？这是美国出版的有关金融信息和市场新闻的出版物，创刊于 1921 年。它与《华尔街日报》同属于道琼斯集团。而这少了一个 r 的 baron 却是指工商业的「巨头」。比如，a press baron「报业大王」。

rags-to-riches
意思是「白手起家的」，只能放在名词之前，所以 a rags-to-riches story 指的是一个人从贫穷到富有的「发迹史」。这个形容词来自短语 from rags to riches。

近义词：self-made
make 可以表示「成功」，所以 self-made 用来形容人「靠自己奋斗成功的，白手起家的」。这个形容词也是只放在名词前，而非后面。
feud with sb
feud 表示「长期不和；世仇，积怨」，要说最知名的世仇家族，当属朱丽叶和罗密欧两家了。
相像词辨析：feudal
feudal 跟 feud 很像，它俩是不是一家的，feudal 是不是对应的形容词？其实不是。feudal 表示「封建的」，来自拉丁语，对应名词是 feudalism「封建主义」；feud 却是来自中古英语。2018 年英一考研阅读有这样一句话。

profile 有不少释义，既可以表示「侧影」，也可以表示「轮廓，外形」，还可表示「简介」，比如，a job profile 指的是「工作简介」。来看 2020 年 9 月六级阅读理解中的一句话。

identical
四级 + 考研词汇
是不是和 identity 很像呢？它俩是一家人吗？这次你答对了。identity 正是 identical 的对应名词，除了「身份」，还可表示两件事物的「一致，，同一性」。所以「利益一致」英文可写作 an identity of interests。
于是乎，identical 这个形容词的意思是 exactly the same, or very similar「一模一样的；非常相似的」。表示「和某物相似」，常用搭配 be identical to/with sth。
The ingredients are identical with those of competing products.
和竞品相比，它们的成分相同。
siphon off /ˈsaɪfən/
我们之前在外刊精读训练营中学过这个单词。siphon 也写作 syphon。作名词时，siphon 指的是「虹吸管」。通过虹吸管，我们可以把水杯里的水在压力的作用下吸 取出来，所以，siphon 作动词时表示「私自挪用，抽调」钱款等，常用搭配为 siphon off。来看下面的《经济学人》例句。
