More than 80 per cent of British households have signed up to at least one regular subscription, up from 65 per cent a year ago, according to a report last week from Barclaycard Payments, which processes around half of the UK’s credit and debit card transactions.Heraldingthe emergence of “super subscribers”, a poll of 2,000 consumers found the average cost of maintaining their subscription addictions has hit nearly £52 per month, or £620 per year — an increase of 12 per cent from a year ago.

Businesses obviously value therecurring revenuesrolling in from all of these subscriptions, but from a personal finance point of view, it could easily add up to an overspending disaster. You may well be thinking of thinning down your subs list, but as I’ve been finding out, it’s no longer as simple as going through your direct debits. How do these differ from a direct debit? Instead of entering your bank details to set up an agreement, you simplypunchin your card number on a retailer’s website and (perhaps unwittingly) give permission for recurring payments to be taken.

Whether you value what you’re paying for is a separate question. Unwrapped magazines orstaleartisanal bread are an undeniable clue (at least gin doesn’t go off!) but digital services are less visible and easy to forget about. The “subscriptions” tab inside the App store on your smartphone will reveal any you’ve taken out — and what you’ll be charged to renew when the time comes.

So have we passed “peaksubscription” or will the trend leach into new areas? A poll of 5,000 Stripe customers across Europe showed nearly one in five would be open to receiving beauty products, clothes or toiletries on a monthly basis, with younger consumers much more likely to sign up. However, Stripe’s business users say their customers are more likely to subscribe if they know they can easily pause or stop a recurring order.

Sadly, this flexible approach has yet to become the norm. If you’re minded to review your own subscription addiction, you may well find that signing off is much harder than signing up.
