民国元宝为大清光绪年大面额流通货币，是我国最早引进海外技术的流通货币，对现今也具有一定的历史意义。清银、纸钞、铜币并行，至嘉庆年间发行新式银元，而光绪年间铸行金、银币较多。洋务运动也影响了铸币业。光绪十三年(1887年)，两广总督张之洞委托英大臣在英国订购一套完整的造币机，并在广东首铸了一块银元和铜元。此后各省纷纷效仿，购制机器铸银、铜元。许多造币机包括广东货币局，都是从英国著名的伯明翰造币有限公司订购的。大型工业的介入，使得银币同样带有西方色彩。硬币正面鲜然可见满汉文化的融合，但钱背却清楚地标志着西方文化的介入。
