Text 1

M: Doctor, I’ve been coughing for three weeks. Do you think this is just the effects of a cold, or something more serious?

W: I’ll run some tests and then give you my opinion. (1)

Text 2

W: Daddy! Where’s Pinky? I think I dropped her in the park!

M: Don’t worry, sweetheart. We’ll go back and look for your pet. (2) But she should sleep in her cage from now on — not in your bed.

Text 3

W: Hey, Jack. Everyone says you’re a funny guy. Tell me a good joke.

M: Aw, Melanie…I always forget them whenever someone asks me that. I guess I can be funny, but it has to be in the heat of the moment, you know? (3)

词汇:in the heat of the moment一时冲动之下;盛怒之下;一时性起

Text 4

M: I threw out the cake that was on the counter. You shouldn’t leave food out for so long — it was green!

W: Oh, no! You shouldn’t have thrown that out. Ask me next time! It wasn’t bad. It was a vegetable cake! (4)

Text 5

M: Ah, a bottle of wine for this evening? May I see your ID, ma’am?

W: Sure. Here it is, but I’m old enough to buy alcohol.

M: You look so young… Oh! It’s your birthday today? Happy birthday! The wine is on us. (5)

W: Thank you so much!

Text 6

W: Max, I need your help. Gary is sick. Will you fill in for(替) him?

M: I might be able to do that…

W: Great! We have a meeting this afternoon. It’s at three in my office. You’ll be able to make it, right? (6)

M: It’s possible I’ll be able to come…

W: Oh, and do you still have that book about office rules? We’ll need to look at that during the meeting, so bring it.

M: I might still have it…

W: You don’t sound very confident. (7) You’re going to be there this afternoon, aren’t you?

M: I don’t think I can say that for sure… (7)

词汇:▲fill in for sb 代替; 暂时补缺 take another person's place; substitute

Text 7 (第9题为总结题)

M: Wow, it looks like the whole football team just showed up!

W: Uh-oh…it’s just the two of us here(这儿就我们俩).

M: We just need to think on our feet(反应迅速)here. Most people order hamburgers, right? (8)

W: Yeah. (8)

M: OK. I’ll get twelve of those started right away. (8)And what about drinks? What’s the most popular drink?

W: Coke. Let me guess — I should start pouring Cokes into cups and setting them aside?

M: Exactly! I’ll make fries right now. Everything should be ready at the same time. Just take the orders first, and then pass out(分发)the drinks. You can help me build the burgers when you’re done.

W:OK. Hopefully, no one else comes in until after we get through(完成)this big order!

M:(9)Yep!OK, it’s show time!(好戏上场)

词汇:▲show up到场,出席come; appear; turn up

▲think on one's feet思维敏捷,反应快

Text 8

W: I’ll never forget one of my most mysterious childhood memories. My uncle took me to a magic show downtown… (10)

M: Aw, what’s mysterious about a magic show? It’s all a big trick! Magicians just move too quickly for human thoughts to catch up with sight. (11) There have been many studies done on it. The magician does something quickly and unexpectedly in front of his audience. (11) It’s so fast and unexpected that the viewers’ thoughts can’t keep up with what the magician has done. So, in the end, it seems like magic because people don’t know how to explain how it happened.

W: Well it sure seemed like magic! One time during the show, I saw him on the stage up in front. Then the lights went out. After a few seconds, the lights came on again…and he was in the middle of the audience! (12) I don’t know how he could have gotten there that quickly!

M: He must have used mirrors or something like that. This was before they started using computers in magic shows, I know. But there must be some very reasonable and non-magical explanation.

Text 9

M: What’s that song you’re listening to?

W: It’s a song called I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For by the band U2. (13)

M: You don’t listen to their music, do you?

W: Of course I do! I love their music.

M: What’s so amazing about them?

W: Well, this song is about searching for the meaning of life…

M: Yeah, I know all about it. I used to like this band, too, until I thought carefully about their words. Take this song for example. The ideas don’t come to any conclusion. They’re searching at the beginning of the song — and they’re still searching at the end! (14)

W: Well, the music is beautiful. I think you’re reading too much into the song…

M: But aren’t songs supposed to be like poems? And shouldn’t poems express great feelings? (16) Shouldn’t they help people think about things that are greater and more important than them?

W: I just like listening to the song, Mike. But now, you’re ruining the experience for me. I thought I could have a good time this afternoon. (15)

M: You should think about music in a deeper way, Alicia. Music is what makes the world turn.

Text 10

New Zealand is a remote, mountainous group of islands in the southwestern Pacific Ocean. The two main islands, the North Island and the South Island, are separated by the Cook Strait. Australia, its neighbor, is about 1600 kilometers away. New Zealand has many volcanoes, some of which are still active today. The South Island is home to the highest mountain peak in New Zealand, Mount Cook. It rises to about 3700 meters. (17) Because of its remote location, New Zealand is rich in unusual wildlife not seen anywhere else in the world. Nearly all the native land animals are birds, and many of these species have lost the ability to fly. The Maori people and European settlers introduced other animals to the islands, and the birds had no defense against them. In the last 1000 years, half of all native animals on the islands have died. (18) New Zealanders, called “Kiwis”, (19) had little connection with the outside world in the past. Today, most Kiwis are no longer farmers. More people live in the city of Auckland on the North Island than the entire South Island. (20)
