Recently, after the U.S. president Donald Trump testing positive for COVID-19, the October issue of the Time magazine features coronavirus billowing from the White House. The red virus cloud is so thick that it obscures the Time logo. The strong red-and-black contrast is visually powerful, arousing widespread discussions.

The outlet takes the president to task for “mocking health precautions, practically daring the virus to infect him. He would sacrifice those around him, the country, and even potentially his own health—anything it took not to appear weak.”

Especially at the early stage of the pandemic, some graphic designs hope to convey confidence and humor. The Iranian fashion publication Prestige Magazine chose to subvert one of the world's most well-known images – the Mona Lisa – covering her face by the now ubiquitous face masks. "However she wears a mask but shows how she is comfortable and smiling. Be positive and stay safe in those days" the caption reads.

Others decided to honor health professionals. For instance, the New York Times magazine has featured the photographic portraits of the health professionals around the world several times, and the New Yorker once depicted a doctor talking to his family on cell.

Not only the medical professionals, but also everyone’s daily life is turned upside down, and the history is documented by the press. American weekly news publication Newsweek looks at how the coronavirus has changed how people work, with the Statue of Liberty working on a laptop in a bathrobe as its cover.

The Observer, however, chose the theme of “love under lockdown”. On the cover, under the blue night sky, a couple at the adjacent balconies stretch their bodies for each other for a kiss, but seemingly hopeless. Their neighbors staying indoors seems to have different stories to tell at the same time: loneliness and even quarrels.

Sometimes, the imageless is the most powerful image. For the first time in the international history of the magazine, the cover of Vogue Italia in April 2020 is completely white. The editor explained, “white means blank, it means it is a whole page yet to be written, the main page of a new story that is about to begin.”

And as the death toll from Covid-19 in the United States reached 100,000, instead of the articles, photographs or graphics that normally appear on the front page of The New York Times, there was just a list: a long, solemn list of people whose lives were lost to the coronavirus pandemic.
